It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of club stalwart and Life Vice President David Yadoo. David died on 1st January and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Further information regarding funeral arrangements to follow.
Last Saturday Rugby followers were pleasantly surprised when Round 14 of the Regional 2 South East campaign was completed in its entirety despite the onset of winter weather. Despite the best efforts of all concerned this weekend the fixture list was severely affected. Sutton faced the daunting task of an away day at Sidcup, a venue that has proved to be the scene of little joy for visiting teams this season. The result of the severe frost meant that the following fixtures were postponed:
Battersea Ironsides v Old Tiffinians
Medway v Old Reigatian
Reeds Weybridge v Gravesend
Sidcup v Sutton & Epsom
The Beckenham v Dartfordians game changed venue to Dartford Valley RFC’s AGP (Artificial Grass Pitch). Thurrock v Old Colfeians was also played on an AGP.
When a game is postponed it is rescheduled for the ‘Next Available Weekend’. There is one fly in the ointment in that the Medway v Battersea Ironsides match from the 7th December has already been rearranged or 25th January. Therefore some previously barren Saturdays, weather permitting, will have matches to enjoy:
25th January
Medway v Battersea Ironsides
Reeds Weybridge v Gravesend
Sidcup v Sutton & Epsom
8th February
Battersea Ironsides v Old Tiffinians
Medway v Old Reigatian
Every cloud has a silver lining for Sutton & Epsom and especially Alex Mount. The popular prop was scheduled to make his 100th league appearance on Saturday in the postponed game. Now the auspicious delay means that he has the opportunity to mark this significant milestone in front of his home crowd at Rugby Lane next Saturday against Old Tiffinians. The match will kick off at 2pm and the Black & Whites will not only be motivated to give Alex Mount a win on his special day but also they will want to rid themselves of the memory of the 41-19 drubbing they received at the hands of the Old Boys in October.
New Year Cheer for the Black & Whites
Sutton & Epsom 21-20 Battersea Ironsides
The September fixtures had concluded with a rousing encounter at Garratt Green when these two fine sides could not be separated and fought to a standstill for an engrossing 19-19 draw. It was the first indication in this campaign that Sutton had transformed their rather porous defence of recent times into a far more formidable outfit. The Ironsides still remain the benchmark for this league and another fiercely competitive contest was expected. Rugby Lane had witnessed five home victories on the bounce but every one of them by a miserly margin. This match maintained that sequence as Sutton edged out Battersea by a solitary point to win 21-20.
