Medway Provide a Fitting Tribute on and off the Pitch
Medway 32-31 Sutton & Epsom
It was an emotional Saturday at Priestfields as the hosts had suffered the tragic passing of their cherished groundsman Mel Collins. The archetypal club stalwart, former player, club sponsor and Vice President passed away whilst marking out the pitch for a midweek Army fixture. Grassroots rugby is far more than promotion and relegation it is about tradition, camaraderie and lifelong friendships and it seemed entirely appropriate that Medway won this thrilling and highly entertaining encounter 32-31.

RIP David Yadoo

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of club stalwart and Life Vice President David Yadoo. David died on 1st January and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. His funeral will take place on 19th February at 2.00pm, Randall’s Park Crematorium, Leatherhead, followed by the wake back at the club.

The family have decided to have family flowers only, but if you would like to make a donation, they have chosen The Wooden Spoon – The Children’s Charity of Rugby, a charity that was close to Davids’s heart: https://davidyadoo.muchloved.com/

RIP John Helder

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Helder. Throughout his life John was an integral part of Sutton & Epsom RFC. After a successful playing career where he represented all senior sides (at the height of which S&E ran 11 senior sides and John was always proud to say he’d played for all of these and in fact did so in one season) he moved on to being an avid supporter and contributor to the club. He undertook many bar duty shifts back in the day when it was resourced by volunteers and in latter years did a couple of years as head of House and Grounds. Following retirement John took a book keeping accountancy course after which he did the books for the club until ill health prevented this. During his working life John worked for a tie manufacturing company and in his retirement he set up a small business ‘Club and Country Colours’ it is through this that he supplied all the S&E club ties. John is survived by his wife Jane and children Nikki, Rory and Melissa plus 7 grandchildren, 2 of which currently play in the Colts and U12s respectively. John will be greatly missed!
