Atlas Foundation Bike Ride raises funds for the club

Last weekend an enthusiastic team of Sutton & Epsom RFC cyclists joined England World Cup winning prop forward, Jason Leonard, as part of his charity peloton in the Tour of Cambridgeshire.

The S&E team, superbly organised by Rowland Cheall and Neil Blewitt, really threw themselves into the challenge and all completed in the 127km course in cracking times. The team made up ex first team players, Dodos, Magpies Golf Society members, our fantastic physio Cherry, a junior parent and various friends were the very beating heart of Jason’s team and did the club proud.

The final 20 km of the course were directly into a howling wind and then driving rain, which made the achievement of finishing in times ranging from 4 hours 15 minutes to six hours all the more impressive. The endeavour wasn’t without pain as you can imagine. Ex first team lock forward Phil O’Sullivan was quoted as saying “my backside was still hurting on Tuesday!”, and Dodos scrum half Nick Harries reported, “I just wish my legs were longer”!

Rowland Cheall would like to personally pass on his thanks to Neil for his excellent organisation and to all members of the team for their hard work and fundraising. It is hoped that if we join this event next year we may get a greater involvement from across the club.

Jason Leonard’s Atlas foundation raised almost £20,000 during this event and because of the energy and fundraising for the Sutton and Epsom contingent within his team, they are donating £5,000 to the mini and junior sections of the club which is wonderful news.

During the weekend everyone had a chance to have a drink or three with Jason and we took the opportunity to tell him that he is always welcome down at Rugby Lane… and props are never too old to play, and that we could do with some cover in the front row for next season… oddly he didn’t seem that keen. But you never know!

Thanks again to everyone for the fundraising and hard work.
